In 1987 Hubert and Terry Lawrence relocated their young family to the beautiful Almaguin Highlands in Burk’s Falls when they came across a gorgeous forested property complete with a workshop and a century old barn. This would form the beginnings of their new life in the North. Hubert, a hobby carpenter, and Terry, an artist, started what would become The Cutter’s Edge by crafting small décor pieces for the home -Terry adding Tole painted touches to Hubert’s creations. Over the years as Hubert’s expertise in woodworking grew, so did their repertoire – they would soon become the region’s experts in handcrafted, solid wood furniture. As the offerings grew, they transformed their barn into what would become their first showroom.
As their three children grew, Hubert and Terry passed onto them the rituals of craftsmanship and care. Their eldest son Adam worked alongside his father and became a designer and builder of custom kitchens. His kitchen cabinetry and woodworking talent is proudly displayed in Verner and Huntsville in our Kitchen Showrooms. Their daughter Robin, along with her husband James, would grow into spearheading the business as the general managers under the tutelage of her parents. James and Robin head up the custom wood and upholstered furniture side of the business – everything from solid wood beds, dining tables, entertainment units to upholstered sofas and couches, accent chairs and ottomans. They also oversee Home Décor – from home decorations and accent pieces, to bedding, linens, wall art and gifts. With a love of all things in vogue, Terry proudly leads the Fashion department where offerings include women’s clothing such as dresses, occasional wear, basics and everything in between.
As the years passed, it was inevitable that The Cutter’s Edge would expand to bring their beautifully crafted heirloom pieces to new horizons with a second showroom in Verner, in the West-Nipissing area between North Bay and Sudbury in 2014. In the Winter of 2018 it was once again time to grow – a third showroom spanning 13,000 square feet was opened in the Muskoka Region in Huntsville to reach an even larger community. In 2020 in response to the COVID pandemic, The Cutter’s Edge online shoppe was launched to reach an even broader audience.
Throughout a 32-year journey, what began as a hobby has since blossomed into a thriving, multi-generational, family business. The Cutter’s Edge has been offering striking handcrafted furniture, distinctive home décor, elegant fashion, and custom kitchens. With two retail showrooms spanning from Verner in West Nipissing to Huntsville in Muskoka, The Cutter’s Edge combines the warmth of time-honoured woodworking techniques with sophisticated contemporary design that caters to both traditionalists and trendsetters alike. All members of the Lawrence family are still very active in the business, which has now transformed into The Cutter’s Edge Corporation, and they’ve now hired a wonderful team of visionaries to work alongside them who they very much consider family.
